Screening Questions

Infection Control Screening in eCTAS includes several core sections such as Travel Risk, Symptoms, and Precautions.

Important: Additional sections or questions may be added or modified based on guidance from Public Health Ontario (PHO) and the Provincial Infectious Disease Advisory Committee (PIDAC) (e.g., adding COVID-19 Screening questions).
Tip: Use Keyboard Navigation & Shortcuts to optimize navigation of eCTAS screens (e.g., click Tab ). To view diagrams of each screen's specific tab flow/order, click on the corresponding link: Infection Control, Patient Presentation, Triage Assessment, Vital Signs.

Details on each section are below.

COVID-19 Screening

On May 20, 2020 a COVID-19 Screening section was added to the eCTAS Infection Control Screening to allow nurses to document responses to the latest screening questions issued by PHO.  The keywords "Suspected COVID" are automatically added to the Subjective Notes field when the screening result is positive. All COVID-19 screening responses are included in the printed Patient Triage Record.

Important: Changes made to COVID-19 Screening responses after you start Triage Assessment will not get updated in the Objective Notes or the Printed Triage Record. Ensure any changes to COVID-19 Screening responses are communicated to relevant staff.

Travel Risk

The Travel Risk section assesses potential exposure to infectious disease based on the patient's travel over the last 3 weeks, or exposure to a sick traveler over the last 3 weeks. If the patient indicates Yes to a Travel Risk question, type the country name into the text box or select a country from the drop-down list. Countries are listed in alphabetical order, and more than one can be selected. eCTAS is automatically updated to reflect newly identified countries with infectious disease risks - country-specific alerts are shown in red. Hover over the country name to show the risk status and mandatory precautions to be applied.

Global travel alerts are shown separately from country-specific alerts.  When PHO designates one or more alerts as global, an indicator - i.e., Global travel alert, is shown next to each of the two Travel Risk questions. The number of currently active global alerts are shown in brackets. The alert details can be viewed by hovering over the indicator.

Symptoms

The Symptoms section is where the nurse documents any relevant symptoms of possible infectious disease. Answer Yes or No to each question.

Note: Clinicians are expected to follow hospital precaution policies when completing the Symptoms section.

Precautions

The Precautions section assesses the patient’s history of exposure to infectious risk. The nurse should document any recommended precautions to be observed with the patient (until directed otherwise by physician order). Answer Yes or No to each question, and select the appropriate options - e.g., Antibiotic Resistant Organism, if applicable.  Selecting a Precaution Measure is recommended but not mandatory - i.e., a red reminder will remain until a Precaution Measure has been selected but will not stop the nurse/clinician from proceeding to the Patient Presentation screen.
